Heinz Beck Seasons at Castello di Fighine

........We had the most spectacular lunch at Fighine. The setting, in the shadow of the historically strategic, 11th century Castello di Fighine, is dramatic. Everyone in our group was utterly delighted with everything - the sublime ambiance al fresco, the professional and knowledgeable service, the impressive wine list, and ultimately the superb food, beautifully presented and tasting exquisite. Even the weather was perfect! Chef Antonio (the resident 1-star Michelin chef) came to say hello at the end of our lunch, and we went to visit his immaculate kitchen. This was definitely worth the drive. We can't wait to go back!

.... We stayed in Fighine so ate at the restaurant three times with a large group of friends that included several children. Every time the service was incredible, and the food was amazing. The service staff seemed comfortable with serving children of different ages as well as adults, and the evenings were all very special. The terrace was beautiful with a canopy of wisteria. Everything we had for dinners was great, from antipasto to dessert. It was a magical experience.

..... This is a favorite spot of our close family friends who live in nearby Citta della Pieve, and they took us here for dinner when we visited them last month. This place used to be a private club and only recently opened to the public (with a new chef). It's quite a drive to get to the restaurant - up a steep and twisty dirt road, but when you reach the top and park in the shadow of the historic castle, you feel like you've stepped back in time. The restaurant is not in the castle itself but in a nearby historic home, part of the original town I imagine. The ambiance is lovely - we dined outdoors on the patio covered with flowers and vines.

.... In a part of Italy where magical experiences await around every bend in the road, Ristorante Castello di Fighine sits well among the many wonderful memories we will take from our visit. This is a restaurant worth every minute of the steep winding drive high above San Casciano dei Bagni. Our visit was an afterthought recommendation from our host at agritourismo Villa Borgo Matero in nearby Cetona who had already pointed us in the direction of the wonderful Daniala's in San Casciano and Nicola's in Cetona. Her apprehension was misplaced as this is a restaurant that is the equal of these legendary local Tuscan kitchens.

Apart from the breath-taking locale alongside the Medieval castle that gives it its name, and overlooking the patchwork Umbrian countryside, everything about the restaurant speaks of understated quality, from the decor to the menu to the service. There is nothing in the world like a career Italian waiter and the service provided during our visit was attentive, knowledgeable, helpful but not overbearing. A perfect accompanyment to a brlliant meal with advice and recommendations in English at our table; in Italian at those of other luncheon guests.

We learned the restaurant has a new chef and what a delightful menu he delivered. All the food is from the local area and delivered to the table with taste, style and flair. Our selections were as exciting as they were ample and managing three courses became a sharing exercise, as much to get through the servings as to share the taste experiences. When next you are in this part of Tuscany Castello di Fighine is a drive you must take for the dining experience as well as the view.

...... Elegant without being forbidding; varied menu at reasonable prices, featuring local produce, obviously very fresh. In the most wonderful setting, with views of the Tuscany of dreams and films. Friendly but not obtrusive service. Natural decor, tiled floor, bar in separate room. Seeing Fighine and then finding this restaurant tucked away by the castle was very special.
